cdpoker – Being Aware of When to Move up a Gear:
The best times I feel, to start getting involved in more hands are typically those when you have a better chance of picking up pots uncontested.

The first of these instances you should be exploiting, are when your table has lost a few players and the blinds are becoming sizeable. Especially if you have been playing conservatively, you can quickly make an addition of some blinds to your stack if you are being aggressive pre flop, and in late position.
This strategy is certainly one I like to use sometimes, but you have to be aware of the risks involved too. If you try this too many times you will get caught out.
Aside from this instance, if you are short stacked and the blinds are putting pressure on you, there is no room or time for sitting and getting blinded away to nothing. If I find myself in this position I will look to move all in preflop with some sort of hand. I particularly feel comfortable with suited connectors, if I don’t have a real premium hand to go in with. I do not like going all in with weak aces at all, or weak kings. I’d rather have (7,8) suited. Although that sounds like a crazy thing to say, try counting the amount of times you move all in whilst short stacked with a hand like (A,3), and the amount of times you are called by a bigger ace.
The fact is that if you go in with a weak king or ace, many of the hands that will call you, will have your hand dominated.
Remember though, if you have an excellent feel for when to step up a gear, and when to get away from a hand, there shouldn’t be too much time spent deliberating which hand to push a small stack in with anyway.
